CCS Legacy Well Risk Workshop Overview

Theme: Securing CO2 Storage: Understanding and Managing Legacy Well Risks

Chaired by Dr. Aaron Cahill, Assistant Professor of Applied Geoscience and Environmental Risk, The Lyell Center, Heriot Watt University

Join us at the Edinburgh Climate Change Institute in Edinburgh for a dynamic, two-day workshop exploring the risks legacy wells pose to Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) containment. This event brings together experts from academia, industry, and government to discuss the latest insights, tools, and decision-making frameworks for assessing and managing CCS legacy well leakage risk.

The workshop will also showcase insights from an ongoing IEAGHG-sponsored project focused on developing a decision-making framework for legacy well risk in CCS, helping to shape consistent and practical approaches to intervention and long-term storage integrity.

Featuring keynote talks (including from the NSTA, DESNZ and key industry operators), interactive panel sessions, real-world case studies, and networking opportunities—including a scenic hike up Arthur’s Seat to round out the event—this workshop is your chance to be part of shaping the future of safe and effective CCS deployment through more effective legacy well risk assessment and risk management.
