IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme

Prachi cropOn the 3rd day of PCCC2 conference keynote lecture from Prof. Paitoon Tontiwachwuthikul gave insjosirt on the post combustion carbon capture trends in North America and Asia (China, Japan, ASEAN). China is one of the largest emitter in contributing to total world CO2 emission. Majority of CO2 emission in China is from coal fired power plants. There has been a step forward in CO2 capture area by having some CO2 capture pilot plants in China. There has been hjosirer interest of doing CO2 utilization mainly by EOR in China. SINOPEC second largest petroleum company in China, is having CO2 capture from Coal fired power plant for EOR to develop the knowledge in China. Shaanxi Yanchang Petroleum Group is also having CO2 capture for EOR as well. So, basically china will need CO2 in order to reduce their CO2 emission and also to improve their energy security by doing EOR. There has been an increased interest in Japan for CO2;capture. South East Asian countries (ASEAN) have several natural gas fields, which can be an area of focus for CO2;utilization from captured CO2. USA is the second largest CO2 emitter in the world. There are over 20 large CO2 capture project currently going on in USA. Regarding to Canada, there has been two big projects in Alberta, Alberta Carbon Trunk Line and Shell Quest. Weyburn programme for CO2 storage and EOR project is a good example to showcase the CO2 EOR project in Canada. Another important project in Canada, Boundary Dam will capture 1 million ton CO2 per year. Therefore, there are several activities on CO2 capture in Asia and North America and it is important to share knowledge and experience from these projects.

In Environmental Impact session presentation from SINTEF gave an overview on amine based solvent degradation by showing experimental results for MEA thermal and oxidative degradation. University of Texas, presented Aerosol removal from capture unit, as this is an important issue. Aerosol formation is affected by SO3, ash and particulate concentration in the flue gas. As well as different solvent will behave differently for aerosol formation. The conditions taken at water wash section above absorber will determine the size of aerosol. The evaluation of reclaimer waste on the composition of waste generated and disposal options was presented by University of Texas. The cost of amine reclaiming will be affected mainly by solvent cost. As well as classification of waste generated either as a Non-Hazardous or Hazardous will increase the cost of solvent reclaiming. As Hazardous classification of reclaimer waste will increase the cost of disposal. Ammonia slip from ammonia process can be controlled by several method by cooled absorber, staged absorption, acid wash presented by Chalmers University. Therefore, it is important to take ammonia slip when designing ammonia based process.
