I was surprised and disappointed to read a tweet by UNEP – “Indian Firm Could lock up 60,000 tonnes of CO2 a year by converting it into baking soda. I would have thought the UNEP would have been more knowledgable.
Simple facts:
- Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate
- You add baking soda to dough to make it rise
- It does that by releasing the CO2 you have captured.
- The CO2 you paid money to capture only stays “locked up” as long as the baking soda stays on the supermarket shelves which could be weeks or a month or so.
- To tackle global warming we need to permanently remove CO2 from the atmosphere
Thus producing products like Baking Soda is not going to stop global warming.
