This clean steel webinar takes a deep dive into the IEAGHG report: ‘Clean steel: an environmental and technoeconomic outlook of a disruptive technology.’

This study presents a comparative analysis of steelmaking pathways to cost-effectively decarbonise a steel mill, taking a life-cycle perspective on associated environmental impacts. This study also gives insight into the primary energy and infrastructure implications associated with large-scale deployment of different steel decarbonisation pathways. Further, it estimates the price premium that clean steel could command in existing and future markets. Lastly, this study formulates recommendations for key stakeholders to support the sector and outlines recommendations for further work. ERM was commissioned by IEAGHG conduct the clean steel study.

Objectives

  • Present a comparative analysis of steelmaking pathways taking a technoeconomic and life-cycle emissions perspective

Presenters

Abdul’Aziz Aliyu

Technology AnalystIEAGHG

Abdul’Aziz manages projects on the techno-economic and lifecycle assessment of low-carbon hydrogen and industrial carbon capture (HICC) and coordinates the IEAGHG International CCS Cost Network. He served as a member of the advisory board for the UK Department of Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), formerly the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), on the review and techno-economic analysis of next-generation carbon capture technologies. He has also reviewed several reports for the International Energy Agency (IEA) on hydrogen.

Abdul’Aziz holds a PhD from the University of Sheffield in ‘post-combustion carbon capture for combined cycle gas turbines,’ where he conducted test campaigns on the 1-tonne-per-day capture plant at the Translational Energy Research Centre (TERC), with the objective of reducing the solvent regeneration energy requirement of the capture process.

Abdul’Aziz is also an alumnus of the IEAGHG International CCS Summer School, held in Canada in 2019, and is an Associate Member of the UKCCSRC.

Ignacio Rabiun

Managing ConsultantERM

Ignacio is a Managing Consultant at ERM with experience in industrial decarbonization. Ignacio has worked on projects related to decarbonization pathways for industry with a strong focus on iron and steel.

Ignacio was the technical lead for the techno-economic assessment of multiple steel production pathways for the IEAGHG. He has also worked with several banks, leading the technical component of climate target setting for the iron and steel sectors within their portfolio. Ignacio has acted as the Lender’s Advisor technical lead on the steel sector for two large transactions, including the technical due diligence of H2 Green Steel on behalf of Just Climate. He is currently supporting a Fortune 100 company on the development of an environmental attribute procurement model for low-carbon steel.

Silvian Baltac

PartnerERM

Silvian Baltac is a Partner at ERM, leading the Industrial Decarbonization Team. With extensive expertise in CCS and hydrogen, Silvian has spearheaded ERM’s initiatives in decarbonizing industrial clusters across Europe, North America and Australia, advising public and private clients, including senior executives within heavy industrials and investor community.

Silvian was the Project Director for our engagements with IEAGHG to evaluate air quality effects of CCS technologies and to assess the techno-economic and lifecycle impacts of clean steel production routes. He was also the Project Director for ERM’s work on industrial cluster decarbonization roadmaps in the UK and Australia, which included steel producers such as British Steel and Blue Scope.

Additionally, Silvian acted as QA Reviewer for ERM’s engagement as Lender’s Advisor for the technical due diligence on H2 Green Steel and the environmental due diligence on the proposed acquisition of US Steel, covering a wider range of current and emerging steel production technologies.
