Challenges and Opportunities of CO2 Capture and Storage in the Iron and Steel Industry

Background
The iron and steel industry is one of the largest industrial sources of CO2. Globally, it accounts for about 6% of anthropogenic CO2 emissions (approx. 1.2 Gt CO2 / year).
Currently, two main processes dominate the global steel production:
- the integrated steel mill in which steel is made by reducing iron ore in a blast furnace and subsequent processing in a primary steelmaking plant (BF-BOF Route); and
- the mini-mill in which steel is made by melting scrap steel or scrap substitutes in an electric arc furnace (EAF Route).
Globally, the production of steel from the BF – BOF route accounts for circa 60% of the production.
Alternate iron and steel making processes based on direct or smelting reduction technologies - such as COREX, FINEX, DRI, Midrex and many others - are also used to produce steel in various sites worldwide. These technologies are commercially proven; nonetheless, BF-BOF and EAF routes should still dominate steel production for several decades to come.
To reduce CO2 emissions from steel mills (specifically from Integrated Steel Mills); one of the leading options being considered by iron and steel stakeholders is CO2 capture and storage (CCS). Development of this technology for application in iron and steel production is still on-going.
The objective of the Workshop:
[1] To address and discuss the difficulties for the implementation of the CO2 Capture and Storage in the iron and steel industry
[2] To discuss and understand the various issues and factors in the evaluation of the cost of CO2 capture in an integrated steel mill.
The workshop will provide a forum with a specific discussion on the cost evaluation of implementing CO2 capture in an integrated steel mill – more importantly addressing the big variations in processes, raw material inputs and products.
The workshop will be led by Prof. Dr. Ing. Gunnar Still, Corporate Adviser of ThyssenKrupp AG and Chairman of the World Steel Association CO2 Breakthrough Programme.
