IEAGHG is pleased to host this webinar to present the findings from the IEAGHG study ‘Analysis of Electrolytic Hydrogen Technologies with a Comparative Perspective on Low-Carbon (CCS-Abated) Hydrogen Pathways’ conducted by ERM on the technical, economic, and environmental performance of various electrolytic hydrogen production pathways, and to compared against fossil-based hydrogen production routes with carbon capture and storage (CCS).

The study provides a comprehensive evaluation of four key electrolyser technologies:

  • Alkaline Electrolysers (AEL)
  • Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM)
  • Solid Oxide Electrolyser Cells (SOEC)
  • Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) Electrolyser

These technologies were analysed under three distinct operating scenarios:

  • Scenario 1 – Grid-Connected: Electrolysers operate exclusively to grid electricity.
  • Scenario 2 – Load-Following with renewable energy:
  • Scenario 3: Excess wind power, which would otherwise be curtailed due to grid limitations or low demand, is redirected for hydrogen production.

The study compares these electrolytic pathways with a comparative perspective with low-carbon (CCS-abated) hydrogen production routes, providing insights.
