IEAGHG High Temperature Solid Looping Cycles Network – Combined meeting report

The 6th HTSLCN Meeting took place from 1st to 2nd September 2015 at the Department of Energy, Politecnico di Milano, in Italy. 72 attendees from 19 countries enjoyed a two-day programme with 45 presentations, site visits to research facilities at Politecnico di Milano and a stunning dinner at Lake Como. Two keynotes covered the progress made in calcium and chemical looping technologies respectively in the last decade. The technical sessions provided the latest advances in calcium and chemical looping pilot plant testing, solid carrier fundamentals, system modelling, process and heat integration, and sorption enhanced reforming technologies. Other topics were utilisation of biomass as a fuel, techno-economics of a large-scale packed bed reactor for chemical looping and the application of calcium looping in cement plants. The meeting formally closed with a discussion forum that summarised the main conclusions from the earlier presentations and the most burning issues for the future. The 7th HTSLCN Meeting will take place from 4th to 5th September 2017 at Swerea MEFOS in Luleå, Sweden.

Proceedings: Workshop on Representing Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage in Energy Systems Models

The USDOE’s Office of Fossil Energy convened a workshop on 17-19 October 2018 in College Park, Maryland, USA, to provide a forum to review and exchange the latest understanding of carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) and to improve the modelling approaches and representation of CCUS in energy systems models (ESMs) and Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs). This was the second workshop on this theme, following a previous workshop also hosted by US DOE-FE on 3-4 April 2017 in Washington DC, USA. This second workshop was designed to grow and expand the number of research groups with expertise in up-to-date modelling of advanced fossil technologies and related market impacts, including application of US National Energy Technology Labs (NETL) cost and performance baseline data and CCUS expertise, tax implications of 45Q, EOR market feedback and information on international markets. It also sought to create a community of practice and to link CCUS technical experts with modellers and analysts.

IEAGHG Modelling and Risk Management Combined Network

IEAGHG’s combined Modelling and Risk Management Network, hosted by the EERC, took place in Grand Forks, North Dakota between 18th and 22nd June 2018. These meetings bring together leading experts from research and industry to discuss the latest work and developments, with over 30 speakers and 71 attendees representing 8 countries. The theme for the meeting was ‘How advances in modelling and risk management improve pressure management, capacity estimation, leakage detection and the prediction of induced seismicity’. Sessions included project updates, the application of oil and gas production experience, modelling capacity, unconventional reservoir risk assessments and active pressure management. The third day focused on conformance and regulation with a keynote presentation by Lynn Helms from the North Dakota Industrial Commission on Class VI well regulations.

Monitoring & Modelling Meeting

The combined meeting of the IEAGHG Monitoring and Modelling Networks took place at the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation from the 6-8th July 2016. The meeting brought together leading experts from research and industry to discuss the latest work and developments, with around 60 participants from 11 countries participating.The theme for this meeting was ‘using the modelling-monitoring loop to demonstrate storage performance more effectively’. Sessions on monitoring included induced seismicity, novel monitoring techniques, monitoring costs, near-surface natural variability, monitoring CO<sub>2</sub>-EOR, wellbore integrity issues, modelling environmental conditions, updates from ongoing and closed projects, lessons from other industries, modelling reservoirs and overburden, pressure measurements and conformance in the monitoring modelling loop.

RMNER Network Meeting

The three day meeting included themes on risk assessment methodologies, risk communication and mitigation strategies as well as environmental research. There was an emphasis on potential impacts of CO<sub>2</sub> in marine environments, natural variability and the unscheduled release of CO<sub>2</sub> from pipelines. Coverage also included formation fluid release, overburden features, international initiatives and environmental impact assessments notably the Peterhead – Goldeneye project.

Monitoring Network and Modelling Network – Combined Meeting

The objective of this project is to test near surface monitoring of CO₂ during a controlled release experiment. By monitoring released CO₂ the sensitivity of monitoring systems could be determined. Data could then be used to test and calibrate migration models under controlled conditions enabling results to be up-scaled to full-scale storage sites. The results can also be used to develop a monitoring protocol. Although this is a near-surface (<20m controlled release) deeper (100m – 300m) releases are planned.

5th HTSLCN Meeting Cambridge

The IEAGHG High Temperature Solid Looping Cycles Network (HTSLCN) emerged from the preceding International Workshop on In-situ CO₂ Removal (ISCR) and aims at bringing together researchers and developers of CO₂ capture technologies that operate at high temperatures in cyclic processes using either circulating or fixed beds of solids. The 5th HTSLCN Meeting was held from 2nd to 3rd September 2013 at Queens’ College, University of Cambridge, UK. It was jointly organised by IEAGHG, University of Cambridge and Cranfield University and received support from the UKCCS Research Centre and Johnson Matthey. A number of 60 delegates attended the meeting, which offered 36 presentations organised in three sessions. The first session covered demonstrations and pilot scale trials. The second session was split in two parallel streams that discussed the fundamentals in calcium looping (CaL) and chemical looping combustion (CLC) respectively. The third session presented new process concepts and system modelling and evaluation. A subsequent panel discussion and a site visit to the facilities at Cranfield University rounded off the technical programme.

IEAGHG OPEC Report of Workshop on CCS and CDM

This report outlines the discussions and outcomes from a workshop jointly held by the IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D implementing agreement (IEAGHG) and the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) on the topic of “Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage in the UN Clean Development Mechanism”. The workshop was the latest in a series of activities by IEAGHG in supporting CCS in the CDM. The objective of the workshop was to share knowledge amongst IEAGHG technical experts and OPEC secretariat and member country delegates, and enhance the understanding amongst all participants of the issues, challenges and approaches to developing CCS projects under the UNs clean development mechanism (CDM) with a focus on OPEC member countries

Summary report of the IEAGHG Modelling Network and the Risk Management Network Meeting

The three day event consisted of a day dedicated to modelling applications; a second day covering a variety of risk management issues and a final day where topics involving both topics were discussed.  The meeting was preceded by visits to the SINTEF research facility in Trondheim and the CO<sub>2</sub> pipeline test facility at the Statoil Rotvoll site.  During the visit to SINTEFF delegates were shown lab-scale development of new solvents for CO<sub>2</sub> capture and an oxy-fuel combustion test rig.

Summary Report of the 2nd Joint Network Meeting

The Joint Network Meeting co-ordinates all four of the geological storage networks: Risk Assessment; Monitoring; Modelling; and Wellbore Integrity; and the Environmental Impacts of CO<strong><sub>2</sub></strong> Storage Workshop Series. The 2<sup>nd</sup> IEAGHG Joint Storage Network meeting was held from the 19<sup>th</sup> to the 21<sup>st</sup> of June 2012 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. It was hosted by Los Alamos National Laboratory and sponsored by Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratory and Schlumberger Carbon Services. Sixty-eight delegates attended, representing 11 different countries. The 7th IEAGHG Monitoring Network Meeting

The theme for this year’s meeting centred on the 3 criteria for transfer of responsibility in the EU directive: Actual behaviour of the injected CO₂ conforms with the modelled behaviour; No detectable leakage; Storage site is evolving towards a situation of long-term stability While the directive is European, the aims are applicable and necessary to all worldwide storage projects. There is no information yet from experience for the 3rd point, which also derives from the first two, so the focus was on the first 2 aims.

Combined Modelling Wellbore Integrity Network Meeting

This combined meeting of the IEAGHG Modelling and Wellbore Integrity networks was held from the 27th to the 29th of April 2011, in Perth, Australia, hosted by Curtin University and the University of Western Australia and sponsored by Shell, Chevron, Curtin University, the University of Western Australia and the Government of Western Australia Department of Mines and Petroleum. Seventy five delegates attended the meeting, representing 9 different countries. The three day event looked at the complexity of models, real projects (local and international), geomechanics and wellbore integrity, followed by a field visit to the site of the planned Collie Southwest CO₂ Hub. T
