The three day meeting included themes on risk assessment methodologies, risk communication and mitigation strategies as well as environmental research. There was an emphasis on potential impacts of CO2 in marine environments, natural variability and the unscheduled release of CO2 from pipelines. Coverage also included formation fluid release, overburden features, international initiatives and environmental impact assessments notably the Peterhead – Goldeneye project.

Monitoring Network Meeting

The 45 presentations and 17 posters covered a range of topics, with sessions on cost-effective monitoring of large projects, permit requirements, induced seismicity, shallow monitoring, geophysical monitoring and CO₂ relationships, pressure monitoring applications, monitoring tools for shallow, surface and deep monitoring, update on projects, and post-closure monitoring. As well as the new results and developments, new at this meeting was a group-work exercise created by Sue Hovorka of the University of Texas. This involved the groups designing monitoring plans for fictional but realistic storage sites, and then these being actually tested with leakage scenarios.

Monitoring Network and Modelling Network – Combined Meeting

The objective of this project is to test near surface monitoring of CO₂ during a controlled release experiment. By monitoring released CO₂ the sensitivity of monitoring systems could be determined. Data could then be used to test and calibrate migration models under controlled conditions enabling results to be up-scaled to full-scale storage sites. The results can also be used to develop a monitoring protocol. Although this is a near-surface (<20m controlled release) deeper (100m – 300m) releases are planned.

IEAGHG OPEC Report of Workshop on CCS and CDM

This report outlines the discussions and outcomes from a workshop jointly held by the IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D implementing agreement (IEAGHG) and the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) on the topic of “Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage in the UN Clean Development Mechanism”. The workshop was the latest in a series of activities by IEAGHG in supporting CCS in the CDM. The objective of the workshop was to share knowledge amongst IEAGHG technical experts and OPEC secretariat and member country delegates, and enhance the understanding amongst all participants of the issues, challenges and approaches to developing CCS projects under the UNs clean development mechanism (CDM) with a focus on OPEC member countries

Monitoring Network and Environmental Research Network – Combined Meeting

From the 27th to 30th August CO₂CRC hosted this meeting of two of IEAGHG’s Networks, the 8th meeting of the Monitoring Network and the 4th meeting of the Environmental Research Network. The theme of the meeting was ‘Realistic monitoring of CO₂ migration – from the reservoir to the surface’, and was attended by 80 delegates from 12 countries. The latest developments and research were presented in sessions covering the regulatory environment, monitoring migration from the reservoir, migration of fluids through the overburden, detection of leakage into shallow groundwater, terrestrial detection monitoring and environmental impacts, marine detection monitoring and environmental impacts, andthe complexity of the natural system and implications for quantification.

Summary Report of the 2nd Joint Network Meeting

The Joint Network Meeting co-ordinates all four of the geological storage networks: Risk Assessment; Monitoring; Modelling; and Wellbore Integrity; and the Environmental Impacts of CO2 Storage Workshop Series. The 2nd IEAGHG Joint Storage Network meeting was held from the 19th to the 21st of June 2012 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. It was hosted by Los Alamos National Laboratory and sponsored by Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratory and Schlumberger Carbon Services. Sixty-eight delegates attended, representing 11 different countries. The aims of the meeting were to:   <ul> <li>Ensure the Networks are working in the most efficient way without duplication or gaps,</li> <li>Identify cross-cutting issues and their consequences; requiring input from more than one network,</li> <li>Set the framework for the future direction of the networks.</li> </ul>

Summary Report of the 6th Risk Assessment Network Workshop

The three day workshop highlighted the latest international CO₂ storage risk assessment developments, discussing communication and regulatory developments, risk and incident management, potential induced seismicity, monitoring performance, understanding potential groundwater impacts, risk assessment methodologies, key outcomes and identified knowledge gaps which need to be addressed in future research.

The 7th IEAGHG Monitoring Network Meeting

The theme for this year’s meeting centred on the 3 criteria for transfer of responsibility in the EU directive: Actual behaviour of the injected CO₂ conforms with the modelled behaviour; No detectable leakage; Storage site is evolving towards a situation of long-term stability While the directive is European, the aims are applicable and necessary to all worldwide storage projects. There is no information yet from experience for the 3rd point, which also derives from the first two, so the focus was on the first 2 aims.

Combined Modelling Wellbore Integrity Network Meeting

This combined meeting of the IEAGHG Modelling and Wellbore Integrity networks was held from the 27th to the 29th of April 2011, in Perth, Australia, hosted by Curtin University and the University of Western Australia and sponsored by Shell, Chevron, Curtin University, the University of Western Australia and the Government of Western Australia Department of Mines and Petroleum. Seventy five delegates attended the meeting, representing 9 different countries. The three day event looked at the complexity of models, real projects (local and international), geomechanics and wellbore integrity, followed by a field visit to the site of the planned Collie Southwest CO₂ Hub. 6th Meeting of the Monitoring Network

There are currently several carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) projects around the world with extensive monitoring programs. A review and new results for many of these were presented. As this meeting was held in the USA, a session was given to the work being carried out by the US Regional Partnerships (USRPs). This includes projects at various phases, including several at validation phase, planning phase and ongoing development phase. The latter includes the Cranfield site in Mississippi.

OPEC-IEA GHG CCS workshop for scientists and professionals in OPEC Member Countries

This workshop was proposed to the IEA GHG by OPEC, and the first plan was to hold the workshop in February 2009, in Algeria. Due to difficulties in preparing invitation letters and visas; the workshop was postponed to November 2009. The suggestion was that Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) was an important topic not being adequately dealt with by OPEC member countries. Therefore, this workshop was planned to introduce scientists and professionals from OPEC member countries with a general overview of the complete CCS chain. In addition, this workshop was considered as a good opportunity for IEA GHG to interact with professionals from these countries, who are involved mainly in the oil and gas sector. The Ministry of Energy and Mines together with Sonatrach, agreed to host the workshop in Hassi Messaoud, Algeria. An organizing committee was established, with members form IEA GHG, OPEC, the Ministry of Energy and Mines and Sonatrach. The workshop was held from the 16th to 20th of November, 2009 and attracted over 25 delegates from 7 countries.

5th Meeting of the Monitoring Network

This was the 5th meeting of the IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme (IEA GHG) Monitoring Network. Since the inception of the Monitoring Network a significant amount of work has been done in this field. There are now a great number of very elaborate Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) demonstration projects occurring worldwide with each one developing and testing new monitoring techniques. While this is happening there is also a great drive from many Governments to put in place the regulations needed to properly licence and supervise CCS activities. This meeting hoped to review where we are with both aspects of CCS and identify what questions still need to be answered
