Overview
Scale up of carbon capture and storage (CCS) to giga-tonne volumes will require using storage sites in close proximity, especially where favourable geology is adjacent to multiple emissions sources. Targeting the same formation for CO2 injection and elevating the pressure envelope can impact the effectiveness of CCS operations with unintended outcomes such as induced seismicity, reduced storage capacity, and loss of containment. Strategic intervention and cooperation may be required to maximise available resources in a geological basin.
The study aims to provide a thorough understanding of the pressure interference issue, offering solutions to optimise available storage resources and manage pressure effectively. This work was undertaken by The Gulf Coast Carbon Center, BEG, University of Texas at Austin on behalf of IEAGHG.
