The 16th IEAGHG International CCS Summer School was held this year from the 23rd to 29th June in Darwin, Australia and 45 students from 28 countries joined us for an intense week of learning, collaborating, and knowledge sharing. Darwin was chosen as the location for the 2024 School due to the exciting activity in the region, namely the Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precinct.

As with every IEAGHG Summer School, we had lectures from international experts detailing the entire CCUS chain – from capture to storage, from policy to economics – no stone was left unturned in the mission to build the ever-growing pool of CCUS-knowledgeable persons. Not only was our lecture programme comprehensive, but collaborative group work, a site visit viewing facilities involved in the Middle Arm initiative (hosted by INPEX), and networking opportunities throughout made this event one never to forget.

Not only did students have a jam-packed week of lectures and learnings on the field trip, but they were also tasked with group work throughout the week, which culminated in a morning of presentations on the Friday. From a ‘Dr Phil’ style discussion to audience participation and passionate staged debates, the students tackled their topics thoughtfully and creatively. The winning group for the best presentation was group 1, who looked at the pros and cons of DAC and bioenergy with CCS in addressing climate change. In addition to the award for the best presentation, the two most outstanding students were chosen – well done to Dillon Ramsook (Trinidad & Tobago) and Previna Arumugam (USA) for their hard work and diligence throughout the week!

We would like to thank the IEAGHG Summer School Series Sponsors for their ongoing support of these events: Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, CSIRO, TotalEnergies, Shell, ExxonMobil, CLIMIT / Gassnova, & Swiss Federal Office of Energy SFOE.

And our Local Sponsors for their generous support in making the 2024 event possible: Northern Territory Government, Australian Energy Producers, INPEX, Santos Ltd, Pilot Energy Limited, Tamboran Resources Corporation, Global CCS Institute, & PESA Energy Geoscience.

To our mentors and speakers who volunteered their time throughout the week and provided their invaluable knowledge to the group of 45 international students – thank you all so much.

To those 45 students, thank you for your enthusiasm, hard work and dedication throughout the week.

Last but definitely not least, a huge thank you to our International Organising Committee for their diligence and efforts over the past six months in bringing this all together – we could not have done this without you.
