Today the UK government announced major support for the first two CCS cluster projects to proceed, as well as a long-term funding commitment of up to £21.7bn over 25 years for the CCS and hydrogen sectors. These first two projects are expected to bring in some £8bn of private sector funding.

The UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said “We’re reigniting our industrial heartlands by investing in the industry of the future. Today’s announcement will give industry the certainty it needs – committing to 25 years of funding in this groundbreaking technology – to help deliver jobs, kickstart growth, and repair this country once and for all.”

These first two projects are the HyNet project and the East Coast Cluster. Each one will enable decarbonisation of several industrial sources of CO2 in different industries, each using a geological storage site offshore.

IEAGHG’s Director and General Manager Tim Dixon says “This is excellent news from the UK government. This will show UK leadership in developing CCS cluster projects. They will be supported by comprehensive business models to enable decarbonisation of several different industries. This is great news for the UK, and also a milestone for CCS globally. The world needs this technology, especially for hard-to-abate industries. On behalf of all at IEAGHG and our members around the world, we congratulate all involved, and thank them for their hard work and perseverance. The UK can become world leading in cluster development, and others can benefit from their learnings and best practice. As IEAGHG, we are happy to help with that international sharing. “
