Iron & Steel Workshop Tokyo

This report summarises the presentations and outcomes from the “Iron and Steel Industry CCUS and Process Integration Workshop”. The workshop took place from 5<sup>th</sup> to 7<sup>th</sup> November 2013 at Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan. IETS (Industrial Energy-related Technologies and Systems), World Steel Association (WSA) and IEAGHG jointly organised this meeting, which was hosted by Prof Tatsuro Ariyama. Key objectives of the workshop were to review the progress in CO<sub>2</sub> reduction technologies in iron- and steelmaking since the last workshop in 2011 and to provide a discussion forum with focus on the Asian iron and steel industries. The 50 attendees were able to participate in a full three-day programme and the IETS members had the opportunity to visit JFE East Japan Works at Keihin subsequently. The first two days of the workshop ran under IEAGHG and focussed on CO<sub>2</sub> reduction strategies in the iron and steel industries, whereas the third day was under the theme of IETS and concentrated on process development and efficiency improvements. The following report provides summaries of some, but not all, of the presentations given at the workshop.

5th HTSLCN Meeting Cambridge

The IEAGHG High Temperature Solid Looping Cycles Network (HTSLCN) emerged from the preceding International Workshop on In-situ CO₂ Removal (ISCR) and aims at bringing together researchers and developers of CO₂ capture technologies that operate at high temperatures in cyclic processes using either circulating or fixed beds of solids. The 5th HTSLCN Meeting was held from 2nd to 3rd September 2013 at Queens’ College, University of Cambridge, UK. It was jointly organised by IEAGHG, University of Cambridge and Cranfield University and received support from the UKCCS Research Centre and Johnson Matthey. A number of 60 delegates attended the meeting, which offered 36 presentations organised in three sessions. The first session covered demonstrations and pilot scale trials. The second session was split in two parallel streams that discussed the fundamentals in calcium looping (CaL) and chemical looping combustion (CLC) respectively. The third session presented new process concepts and system modelling and evaluation. A subsequent panel discussion and a site visit to the facilities at Cranfield University rounded off the technical programme.

Monitoring Network and Environmental Research Network – Combined Meeting

From the 27th to 30th August CO₂CRC hosted this meeting of two of IEAGHG’s Networks, the 8th meeting of the Monitoring Network and the 4th meeting of the Environmental Research Network. The theme of the meeting was ‘Realistic monitoring of CO₂ migration – from the reservoir to the surface’, and was attended by 80 delegates from 12 countries. The latest developments and research were presented in sessions covering the regulatory environment, monitoring migration from the reservoir, migration of fluids through the overburden, detection of leakage into shallow groundwater, terrestrial detection monitoring and environmental impacts, marine detection monitoring and environmental impacts, andthe complexity of the natural system and implications for quantification.

Summary report of the IEAGHG Modelling Network and the Risk Management Network Meeting

The three day event consisted of a day dedicated to modelling applications; a second day covering a variety of risk management issues and a final day where topics involving both topics were discussed.  The meeting was preceded by visits to the SINTEF research facility in Trondheim and the CO<sub>2</sub> pipeline test facility at the Statoil Rotvoll site.  During the visit to SINTEFF delegates were shown lab-scale development of new solvents for CO<sub>2</sub> capture and an oxy-fuel combustion test rig.

4th IEAGHG Network Meeting & Technical Workshop on High Temperature Solid Looping Cycles

The IEAGHG High Temperature Solid Looping Cycles Network emerged from the preceding International Workshop on In-situ CO<sub>2</sub> Removal (ISCR) and aims at bringing together researchers and developers of CO<sub>2 </sub>capture technologies that operate at high temperatures in cylindrical processes using either circulating or fixed beds of solids.   Within the last few years drawbacks of the conventional amine-based CO<sub>2 </sub>capture systems have spurred interest in solid looping processes. Since then the technology has advanced considerably and several pilot plants have been build and brought into operation, e.g the 1.7MW pilot plant at La Pereda in Spain and the 1MW pilot plant at TU Darmstadt in Germany. Progress has been made in particular in carrier/sorbent development as well as in process design and integration. In Calcium Looping, for instance, the use of spent sorbent to produce cement has been demonstrated.

Summary Report of the 2nd Joint Network Meeting

The Joint Network Meeting co-ordinates all four of the geological storage networks: Risk Assessment; Monitoring; Modelling; and Wellbore Integrity; and the Environmental Impacts of CO<strong><sub>2</sub></strong> Storage Workshop Series. The 2<sup>nd</sup> IEAGHG Joint Storage Network meeting was held from the 19<sup>th</sup> to the 21<sup>st</sup> of June 2012 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. It was hosted by Los Alamos National Laboratory and sponsored by Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratory and Schlumberger Carbon Services. Sixty-eight delegates attended, representing 11 different countries. Summary Report of the 6th Risk Assessment Network Workshop

The three day workshop highlighted the latest international CO₂ storage risk assessment developments, discussing communication and regulatory developments, risk and incident management, potential induced seismicity, monitoring performance, understanding potential groundwater impacts, risk assessment methodologies, key outcomes and identified knowledge gaps which need to be addressed in future research.

3rd High Temperature Solid Looping Network Meeting

The third meeting of the IEAGHG high temperature solid looping network was held from 29<sup>th</sup> August to 1<sup>st</sup> September at the Technical University of Vienna. It was held in parallel with a meeting of the IEA Fluidised Bed Combustion implementing agreement and the International Conference on Polygeneration. This gave the 108 delegates who attended the network meeting the opportunity to meet with those engaged in these other related areas. For this meeting a considerable effort was made to attract members of the Chemical Looping Combustion (CLC) research community which has been less represented at past meetings where calcium oxide looping (CaL) cycles for CO<sub>2</sub> capture have tended to dominate. This should be a useful change as both processes use similar dual fluidised bed hardware and there is also emergence of hybrid schemes employing both types of reaction. Also several of the larger test facilities are now set up to test both CLC and CaL processes using the same equipment.

The 7th IEAGHG Monitoring Network Meeting

The theme for this year’s meeting centred on the 3 criteria for transfer of responsibility in the EU directive: Actual behaviour of the injected CO₂ conforms with the modelled behaviour; No detectable leakage; Storage site is evolving towards a situation of long-term stability While the directive is European, the aims are applicable and necessary to all worldwide storage projects. There is no information yet from experience for the 3rd point, which also derives from the first two, so the focus was on the first 2 aims.
