6th Meeting of the Monitoring Network

There are currently several carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) projects around the world with extensive monitoring programs. A review and new results for many of these were presented. As this meeting was held in the USA, a session was given to the work being carried out by the US Regional Partnerships (USRPs). This includes projects at various phases, including several at validation phase, planning phase and ongoing development phase. The latter includes the Cranfield site in Mississippi.

5th Meeting of the Risk Assessment Network

The two day workshop was divided into eight sessions, opening with a welcome session and closing with the Outcomes and Recommendations discussion session. Presentations were held over six sessions, covering key topics: Regulatory Requirements, What can Risk Assessment deliver?, Risk Communication, Update from Real Projects, Induced seismicity/Geomechanics, and Long-term Risk Management; with twenty minute presentations on average and a minimum thirty minute facilitated discussion. All the discussion sessions were met with enthusiastic input from all participants, many of which continued into the coffee and lunch breaks, expressing the great interest in the workshop topics, and the importance of such an open forum for advancing knowledge in this topical field.

2nd Meeting of the Geological Storage Modelling Network

The second meeting of the IEAGHG International Research Network on CO₂ Geological Storage Modelling was hosted by the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, on February 16th and 17th, 2010. The meeting comprised four technical sessions: Modelling Methodology and Recent Advances, Integrated Roles and Objectives of Modelling, Modelling of Real Storage Projects; Case Studies and International Efforts towards Best Practice and Modelling Protocols. The agenda was designed to provide ample time for discussions between participants, with breakout groups in sessions 1 and 2, and plenary discussions following sessions 3 and 4. Discussions following Session 1 focussed on recent advances in modelling. Current theoretical and laboratory scale research has continued to advance our understanding of the processes which will control the behaviour of stored CO₂ in the subsurface and govern potential leakage mechanisms. However, there was a consensus that an increased number of large-scale storage projects are required to provide data with which modelling methods can be calibrated

International Network for CO₂ Capture: Report on 12th Meeting

This report contains summaries of the presentations on a variety of developments including updates on amines, use of ammonia as a solvent, ionic liquids, solid sorbents, pilot plant and demonstration projects, modelling activities and environmental impacts of post combustion capture. In addition, the overall meeting evaluation and the major learning points from the meeting are summarised at the end of the report.

Workshop on Operating Flexibility of Power Plants with CCS

This report is a summary of a workshop on the operating flexibility of power plants with CCS that was organised in November 2009 by IEAGHG in collaboration with Imperial College London. Operating flexibility is becoming recognised as an important issue for CCS plants but so far there has been relatively little discussion of the subject.The workshop included presentations by invited speakers followed by discussions sessions. The presentations focussed on electricity systems and CCS operating requirements, and modelling and operating experience of the flexibility of the three main CO2 capture techniques (pre-combustion, post combustion and oxy-combustion capture) and CO2 transport and storage.

OPEC-IEA GHG CCS workshop for scientists and professionals in OPEC Member Countries

This workshop was proposed to the IEA GHG by OPEC, and the first plan was to hold the workshop in February 2009, in Algeria. Due to difficulties in preparing invitation letters and visas; the workshop was postponed to November 2009. The suggestion was that Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) was an important topic not being adequately dealt with by OPEC member countries. Therefore, this workshop was planned to introduce scientists and professionals from OPEC member countries with a general overview of the complete CCS chain. In addition, this workshop was considered as a good opportunity for IEA GHG to interact with professionals from these countries, who are involved mainly in the oil and gas sector. The Ministry of Energy and Mines together with Sonatrach, agreed to host the workshop in Hassi Messaoud, Algeria. An organizing committee was established, with members form IEA GHG, OPEC, the Ministry of Energy and Mines and Sonatrach. The workshop was held from the 16th to 20th of November, 2009 and attracted over 25 delegates from 7 countries.

5th Meeting of the Monitoring Network

This was the 5th meeting of the IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme (IEA GHG) Monitoring Network. Since the inception of the Monitoring Network a significant amount of work has been done in this field. There are now a great number of very elaborate Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) demonstration projects occurring worldwide with each one developing and testing new monitoring techniques. While this is happening there is also a great drive from many Governments to put in place the regulations needed to properly licence and supervise CCS activities. This meeting hoped to review where we are with both aspects of CCS and identify what questions still need to be answered

4th Meeting of the Risk Assessment (Management) Network

The fourth IEA GHG Risk Assessment Network Meeting was held on the 16th—17th April 2009 in Melbourne, Australia, and hosted by CO₂CRC. Cliff Kavonic of Victorian Department of Primary Industries gave the official welcome. The Victorian Government was that day publishing a report by Geoscience Victoria on the storage potential in the Gippsland basin in south Victoria. The fifty six attendees enjoyed the discussions based around the six sessions. These were on reports from other initiatives, leakage impacts, combining monitoring with modelling and risk assessment, insurance and risk, risk communication, and updates from real projects.

5th Meeting of the Wellbore Integrity Network

The IEA GHG Wellbore Integrity Network has been running for 5 years now, and the meeting in 2009 was held in Calgary, Canada. The attendance for the meeting covered the usual mix of industry, academia, research and regulators, but there was a noted increase in attendance from industrial companies. This was demonstrative of the local area that the meeting was held in, with a large number of oil companies working in the surrounding province. This increased industry representation moved the discussion sessions to areas previously not addressed, or only addressed in brief outline, and this is indicative of the progress of the meeting and its continued worth. A possibility for the future of the network will be an alteration in its role, from pure research into wellbore integrity, materials and abandonment procedures, to one of education of industrial operators, and the broaching of the gap between experience gained from the oil and gas industry, and the needs and demands of regulations relating to CO2 Capture and Storage (CCS) operations.

CO₂ Geological Storage Modelling Workshop

The concept of this workshop was previously proposed to the IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme (IEA GHG) by BRGM and Schlumberger, and following the approval of the workshop in principle, discussion was initiated in June 2008 at the IEA GHG Joint Network Meeting in New York. The suggestion was that CO₂ geological modelling for Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage (CCS) was an important topic not being adequately dealt with by the existing storage based research networks. Further discussions by these network groups concluded that this was indeed a gap, and that an initial workshop should be held to determine the viability of forming a separate network dealing solely with geological storage modelling.

Environmental Impacts Meeting Report

The meeting was held over 3 days, and covered views of both regulators and industry, and the presentations covered impacts of leaks in both terrestrial and marine environments, and also extensively covered the experience of various research bodies and projects from Europe and the USA. The closing session included an open discussion to determine the needs of the different groups likely to be involved in a storage project, from regulators, industry, researchers and the general public.

Joint Network Meeting report

The agenda was structured in accordance with the 3 criteria with sessions on review of performance monitoring tools, data integration and demonstrating monitoring data conforms with predictive modelling, developing protocols and strategies to form a monitoring plan and monitoring of the outer envelope – demonstrating no leakage. There was also a discussion session on CCS in the CDM – what modelling is required for monitoring and a session on updates and permanent Installations; current and future activities. The meeting ended with a review of the main learnings taken from the meeting.
