Summary Report of the 6th Risk Assessment Network Workshop

The three day workshop highlighted the latest international CO₂ storage risk assessment developments, discussing communication and regulatory developments, risk and incident management, potential induced seismicity, monitoring performance, understanding potential groundwater impacts, risk assessment methodologies, key outcomes and identified knowledge gaps which need to be addressed in future research.

3rd High Temperature Solid Looping Network Meeting

The third meeting of the IEAGHG high temperature solid looping network was held from 29th August to 1st September at the Technical University of Vienna. It was held in parallel with a meeting of the IEA Fluidised Bed Combustion implementing agreement and the International Conference on Polygeneration. This gave the 108 delegates who attended the network meeting the opportunity to meet with those engaged in these other related areas. For this meeting a considerable effort was made to attract members of the Chemical Looping Combustion (CLC) research community which has been less represented at past meetings where calcium oxide looping (CaL) cycles for CO2 capture have tended to dominate. This should be a useful change as both processes use similar dual fluidised bed hardware and there is also emergence of hybrid schemes employing both types of reaction. Also several of the larger test facilities are now set up to test both CLC and CaL processes using the same equipment.

The 7th IEAGHG Monitoring Network Meeting

The theme for this year’s meeting centred on the 3 criteria for transfer of responsibility in the EU directive: Actual behaviour of the injected CO₂ conforms with the modelled behaviour; No detectable leakage; Storage site is evolving towards a situation of long-term stability While the directive is European, the aims are applicable and necessary to all worldwide storage projects. There is no information yet from experience for the 3rd point, which also derives from the first two, so the focus was on the first 2 aims.

Summary Report of the 2nd IEAGHG Social Research Network Meeting

Combined Modelling Wellbore Integrity Network Meeting

This combined meeting of the IEAGHG Modelling and Wellbore Integrity networks was held from the 27th to the 29th of April 2011, in Perth, Australia, hosted by Curtin University and the University of Western Australia and sponsored by Shell, Chevron, Curtin University, the University of Western Australia and the Government of Western Australia Department of Mines and Petroleum. Seventy five delegates attended the meeting, representing 9 different countries. The three day event looked at the complexity of models, real projects (local and international), geomechanics and wellbore integrity, followed by a field visit to the site of the planned Collie Southwest CO₂ Hub. IEAGHG Seminar on Control of Nitrosamine Formation in CO₂ Capture Plant: Report on Meeting

This workshop was held aiming to answer the following questions: What inputs can we expect in terms of NO2 levels and amine quality? How to improve the reliability and plausibility of nitrosamine analysis? What level of accuracy is possible in nitrosamine detection? Which concentration of nitrosamine can be expected until the first reclaimer operation? How can nitrosamine levels be minimized? How likely is the formation of volatile nitrosamine? How can we move forward with providing reliable information to the public?

Summary Report of the IEAGHG Workshop - Natural Releases of CO₂: Building Knowledge for CO₂ Storage Environmental Impact Assessments

The IEAGHG workshop on Natural Releases of CO₂: Building Knowledge for CO₂ Storage Environmental Impact Assessments was held in Maria Laach, Germany, in November 2011 and hosted by CO₂GeoNet and BGR. The workshop was well attended, with forty seven participants from over ten different countries. Sessions included: Setting the Scene; Releases, Magnitudes and Impacts: Marine Environments and Terrestrial Environments; Mobilisation of Brine and Metals; Near Surface vs. Deep Subsurface Mechanisms and, Monitoring Challenges in Light of Natural Systems. Due to considerable interest in the workshop and an overly prescribed agenda, poster sessions were included within coffee and lunch breaks, with eight presented posters during the workshop.

2nd High Temperature Solid Looping network meeting

The second meeting on the high temperature solid looping network was held at the Netherlands energy research centre at Petten from 15-17th September 2010. Approximately 70 delegates attended the meeting of which about 25% were representing industry. 24 papers were presented and discussed during the event and in addition 7 posters were also on display. ECN is actively engaged in research in this area and delegates were able to see first hand the large pilot plant constructed under the EU framework 6 and CCP 2 CACHET project to demonstrate an integrated sorbent enhanced reforming and water gas shift process using multiple fixed beds. Also included in the site tour were ECN’s fluid bed biomass gasification pilot plants, the latest of which is a large 0.8 MW unit large enough to operate without external heat jacketing to compensate for heat losse

6th Meeting of the Wellbore Integrity Network

This eclectic mix of representation ensured the discussion sessions remained varied, without bias, and included debate reflecting different viewpoints. The future of the network will be determined over the next couple of years, with a proposal to hold a combined Modelling / Wellbore Integrity Meeting in 2011, and the 2nd Joint Network Meeting in 2012. The outcomes of these meetings will help to shape the future development of the IEAGHG networks as a whole. The format of the meeting allowed for 20 minute presentations with 5 minutes for questions. Each of the three meeting sessions was followed by prolonged discussion sessions where ideas and experiences were discussed by the meeting attendees at a greater level of detail. These discussion sessions are the primary focus of this report, and the presentations are available on the network webpage for reference.

Workshop on Environmental Impact of Amine Emissions during Post-Combustion Capture

The amine post combustion capture technology is based on washing the flue gas with a solvent that captures CO₂. Thus, a small fraction of this solvent will be released through the stack together with the cleaned flue gas. This release may cause environmental concerns both directly and indirectly through subsequent solvent degradation into other substances in the atmosphere. There is a clear lack of understanding of the characteristics of the used solvent and their degradation products, which are an additional concern. From the global prospective, it is clear that the activities in relation to this topic are limited and there is a clear need for cooperation and knowledge exchange between the different institutes. Therefore, the “Environmental Impact of Post Combustion Capture” workshop was held, primarily to share information on the environmental effect of using chemical solvents for capturing CO₂, associated with conventional combustion based fossil fuel fired power stations

1st Social Research Network Meeting

As this was the first IEA GHG Social Research Network meeting, group discussions took place to identify the overarching aims and objectives of the network. After much discussion and reiteration it was agreed that the overarching aim should be: To foster the conduct and dissemination of social science research related to CCS in order to improve understanding of public concerns as well as improve the understanding of the processes required for deploying projects
