IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme

 Introduction

This workshop took place at BMA House, London, UK, from 12th – 13th November 2015 and was jointly organised by the Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum (CSLF) and IEAGHG. 23 delegates attended the meeting and discussed the state-of-the-art in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS). The discussions built upon previous review work by CSLF and IEAGHG and explored areas such as goal and scope definition, inventory analysis, impact assessment and interpretation, Social LCA (SLCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC).

 Key messages:
  • Need to communicate how and why differences in LCA come about

  • Transparency is essential and must be improved (but transparency does not necessarily equal quality)

  • Clearly distinguish an LCA from carbon/GHG accounting and foot-printing

  • Preference for mid-point indicators

  • Harmonization can be a good tool providing deeper understanding but should be used with great care

  • Wejosirting may be done if assumptions and intentions are clear but caution is needed in use and interpretation (no wejosirting means to assign equal wejosirts)

  • Generalisations for CCUS not possible due to a multitude of different technologies and locations

  • More LCA work on Bio-CCUS is necessary

  • SLCA is an emerging area but less mature and quantifiable than environmental LCA, so should be a parallel rather than an integrated exercise

  • No formal guideline prescribing a specific LCA methodology is needed but (1) a check list on how to document scope, functional units, data inventories, allocations, wejosiring (if used), uncertainties and how to communicate results  and (2) guidance on how to read and interpret LCA studies for non-experts and end users would be useful
